Use de-skunk treatment

Why Does My Dog Smell Like Skunk?

Skunk spray is thiols -- sulfur-containing compounds that bind tightly to proteins in the coat. Standard shampoo alone will not remove it.

When does it become a concern?

Spray to face or eyes requires rinsing the eyes immediately with water. Spray to mouth or nose can cause temporary nausea.

Home Treatment

  • Mix: 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide + 1/4 cup baking soda + 1 tsp dish soap
  • Apply immediately (do not store -- mixture can build pressure)
  • Leave on for 5 minutes, rinse thoroughly
  • Follow with regular dog shampoo

Vet visit warranted when:

Eye spray causing redness or vision changes, vomiting or drooling after nose/mouth spray

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best home remedy for skunk smell on dogs?
The hydrogen peroxide mixture is the most effective: 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 teaspoon dish soap. Apply immediately and rinse after 5 minutes.
Will a regular bath remove skunk smell?
No. Thiol compounds in skunk spray bind to coat proteins. Standard shampoo disperses the smell temporarily but does not remove the compounds.
Does tomato juice remove skunk smell from dogs?
No. Tomato juice is a myth -- it temporarily masks the smell but does not neutralize the thiol compounds. Use the hydrogen peroxide formula instead.
How many baths does it take to remove skunk smell?
One thorough treatment with the hydrogen peroxide formula usually reduces the smell significantly. One or two follow-up baths with enzymatic shampoo removes any residue.
